Colors follow the real clock rules for each region, including daylight saving. Drag the date to watch zones change through the year. Outlines are simplified.

What UTC means

UTC is the world's reference time. Every time zone is described by how far it sits from UTC. A zone shown as UTC-05:00 is five hours behind UTC. A zone shown as UTC+05:30 is five and a half hours ahead of it.

Photos and files often store this offset next to the time they were made. It tells you the local time was at that moment, wherever in the world the person was.

Daylight saving time

Many places move their clocks forward for part of the year, which changes their offset by one hour. Chicago, for example, is UTC-06:00 in winter and UTC-05:00 in summer. This is why the same place can show different offsets on different dates.

Odd zones

Most zones are a whole number of hours from UTC, but some are not. India is UTC+05:30, Nepal is UTC+05:45, and parts of Australia and Canada use half-hour offsets. A few zones sit near the date line and run a full day ahead of neighbors.
